CHAPTER 16

BJORN

If vampires could dream, Bjorn would have been certain he’d dreamt of Arietta during the day. When he awoke in the hotel room’s bland armchair with a start, he thought for a moment he had been dreaming.

The little bird’s mind-numbing scent filled his senses with such a tantalizing force, he expected to see her standing there in front of him, freely offering herself once more. Then he realized he’d propped his head up on the hand with which he’d gripped her shoulder that morning and now inhaled the intoxicating aroma still lingering on his fingers.

Bjorn gripped the armrests of the chair so tightly, the wooden frame beneath groaned and cracked before he pushed himself to his feet.

Arietta had offered herself to him for nothing more than a few scratches on his arm. And he, gods help him, had almost accepted. He had almost taken her, all of her, and the simple act of holding his own desire at bay had been excruciating.

After hours of undead, undreaming sleep, it felt as if the whole thing had only just happened.

And her scent was everywhere.

Before he’d fallen into that dreamless sleep, he’d had to trust in her understanding that nothing was safe for either of them here. He’d had to assume she knew the deadly consequences of trying to escape him. Apparently, that decision had not been unfounded; her scent was still strong enough to assure him she’d remained in this room.

With swift movements, he tugged on his black dress shirt and quickly fastened the buttons, staring at his reflection with a mixture of determination and loathing.

He’d taken this much too far. The little bird was nothing but a liability to his plans, his responsibilities, his allegiance to his tribe and his brothers in Europa awaiting the return of their king.

More than that, she was a threat to his self-control.

If he didn’t act quickly to secure them safe passage into Canada and as much immunity as the southern king was willing to provide, self-control was all Bjorn would have in the end.

He wouldn’t even have that if Arietta insisted on testing his resolve at every single turn.

The worst of it was she had no idea what she was doing. That much was perfectly clear in her wide eyes, her fluttery breath, the trembling of her body he’d seen from the corner of his eye before she’d finally stopped questioning him and had retired to the bed.

No, his little bird couldn’t possibly understand the power she held over him—what she was doing to him.

When he’d first seen her, he’d thought she was so much like Naomi. Even during their flight to California, the similarities between those two had been so starkly impossible to ignore. But now it was also impossible to ignore how much worse things had become this time. And how quickly.
